MARION WINS César Award

Alain Delon: "Marion, I give you this César. I think this César is for a great great actress, and I know what I'm talking about"

Marion: "Thank you. I'd like to thank Olivier Dahan. Olivier, you're not here tonight, but you changed my life, you changed my life as an actress, you changed my whole life. You wrote the most beautiful role ever, and you gave it to me, you asked me to play a whole life, and just for that, it (the César) is obviously for you. I'd like to thank the crew of course: the French one, the English one, the one from the Czec Republic; all these beautiful souls who made this adventure so extraordinary. I'd like to thank all my partners who have been ... who have given me so so so so much (she begins to cry) and I'd like to thank my parents because they made me feel like being an actress, they gave me all the freedom to say that it was possible to act great parts, and I'd like to thank my inspirations: Marcel, my grandmothers and the little blond angel. All this people together created Piaf and also Ginou: I love you; you opened your life to me, you opened 15 years of friendship with Piaf to me and it really inspired me. And I'd like to thank all the people who are giving this (the César) to me tonight. Thank you very much ! (Translation by Cassie)."

Marion accepts her Best Actress award.

Stay tuned for results throughout the day (I believe the ceremony starts at 4pm EST). Amely has very graciously volunteered to give us updates.

Although there's some doubt as to whether Marion will take the Best Actress award tonight, let's stay hopeful and wish her (and everyone nominated for their work on "La Vie en Rose") good luck!

UPDATE: Keep checking the comments section, as Amely is providing us with regular updates about the ongoing ceremony. Also, she's directing us to Getty Images, which has the first photos of Marion's arrival.

UPDATE 2:
So Marion won the big prize and we're thrilled for her. Hopefully someone will upload her speech to YouTube in warp speed :) Thanks to Amely for the running commentary. A very exciting day here at "Road to Oscar." And the end of the road is almost here -- seems like only yesterday!

While we wait, make sure you check the excerpts from a documentary on Marion's "LVeR" journey here. The documentary will be aired soon on French television. This is fantastic stuff; we even get to see Marion's reaction to her Golden Globe win (first clip); and her having a ciggy before the Oscar nominations announcement (not because she's nervous, she says, lol). Thanks, Amely!

Oooh exciting. The clips from the documentary on the Cesar website are FANTASTIC. So amazing to watch behind the scenes as she won the Globe, and how anxious and smoking hot she was before the Oscar nom...haha. I really hope that doc will be distributed worldwide with English subs somehow.

Anonymous said...

OMG, she's so gorgeous, what a smile, you're the best

Dorothy Porker said...

I can't wait to see footage. I'm so ecstatic right now, no matter what happens on Sunday, Marion Cotillard gave one of the best performances ever captured on film and she's been honored by so many diverse bodies I respect. I'm sure this victory means the world to her. Amazing!

Anonymous said...

yes she's shock, we can easyly see she's happy to have it whearas she already she's got a lot of award for this perf

k said...

Congrats to her!

Anonymous said...

Best film : La Graine et le Mulet.
Dahan did not have to come.

Anonymous said...

the audience was so cold.
At the beginning of her speech she doesn't seem as shocked as the bafta awards, but then the emotion came and also the tears...
She thank a lot of people, also her grand mothers lol.

Best film again for kechiche, so LVeR 5/11

Dorothy Porker said...

How was the audience cold? They weren't too happy? Didn't clap too much? That's kind of sad.

Anonymous said...

i saw the ceremony and i'm a little bit upset, the ceroemony are boring, no humour, no jock and it's too serious but i'm really glad marion wins, she was increadible, her speech was so nice and faithful to her, she thanks a lot of people, and she deserved it so much!!! i regret the last host Valery Lemercier, the last year was so funny!!

one good point: marion

Anonymous said...

what a speech ! She made everyone cry ! And Alain Delon said "I'm honoured to give this awards to a very great actress, and you know what I'm talking about" when he gave her the César. I'm sure every French who was watching cried, she was so cute and speechless....

Anonymous said...

About the audience, it's like the Oscars. Boring and they don't laugh that much. But when it's time to give some claps and cheers, they are very good :they were great for Jeanne Moreau, Romy Schneider Tribute, Abdelatif Kechiche who really deserved the Césars he won for La Graine et le Mulet, and for Marion obviously

Dorothy Porker said...

Alain Delon is such a gentleman. I really can't wait to hear the speech. Can someone paraphrase/translate what she said?

k said...

I've just replaced the picture -- hope you don't mind, Dorothy!

Anonymous said...

From what I remember, she said she is grateful forever to Olivier Dahan, who "created the best role ever", she thanked her partners who "gave her so much back", she thanked her parents, her grandmothers, her friends (by their nicknames, maybe the "blond angel" is Guillaume, who knows ?), everyone who voted for her... etc

Anonymous said...

like you said dorothy, they didn't clap too much.

some photos of the speech in the getty gallery

and for the video they are uploading some little by little here http://cesar2008.blog.canal-plus.com/index.html#Séquence_1

so be patient!!

Anonymous said...

I was funny when she came up on the stage. She was so happy and shocked that she almost forgot to accept the César from the hans of Alain Delon ^^

Dorothy Porker said...

Sweet. Thanks for all the feedback. I'll keep checking the cesar2008 blog.

Great photo, k!

HER SECOND LAST WIN OF THE SEEEASON! XD

Dorothy Porker said...

Fingers crossed, eegah!

k said...

It's going to be bizarre, ending this blog!

Anonymous said...

I can try to translate her speech if you want

Dorothy Porker said...

Yeah, I'm getting kind of sad about it; but of course, I'll be ecstatic if it ends the "right" way (i.e. with Marion standing on that podium next to Forest).

Dorothy Porker said...

Still, it'll be like a nice time-capsule to re-visit every now and then.

Dorothy Porker said...

Please Cassie, do so. I got a few things here and there, but not all of it.

k said...

Yes, yes...bittersweet, really.

I caught bits and pieces of her speech, but I can't take in French at that speed!

Anonymous said...

I didn't get all of but she thanked Olivier for changing her life, as an actress, and her heart also? (I didn't understand that part). She thanked the Cech, French and English people who worked on the film, and her acting 'partners'. She thanked her parents, her grandmothers, some friends including a blond angel (how that could be Guillaume I don't know, but Angel in french is usually a term of endearment to a partner), she thanked Piaf, and Ginou, and I think she thanked everyone there tonight for giving it to her.

It's really great, I think she is beginning to be sad too though, as the whole 'adventure' is nearly over for her.

Anonymous said...

sorry if there are some mistakes

full speech :

Alain Delon : "Marion, I give you this César. I think this César is for a great great actress, and I know what I'm talking about"

Marion : "Thank you. I'd like to thanl the crew of course, the french one, the english one, the one from Tchecoslovaquia, all these beautiful souls who made this adventure so extraordinary. I'd like to thank all my partners who have been ... who have given me so so so so much (she begins to cry) and I'd like to thank my parents because they made me feel like being an actress, they gave me all the freedom to say that it was possible to act great parts, and I'd like to thank my inspirations : Marcel, my grandmothers and the little blond angel. All this people together created Piaf and also Ginou :I love you, you opened your life to me, you opened 15 years of friendship with Piaf to me and it really inspired me. And I'd like to thank all the people who are giving this (the César) to me tonight. Thank you very much !"

Anonymous said...

did you notice the nice way alain delon called the winner?
"le cesar de la meilleure actrice est attribué à "la mome" Marion"

Anonymous said...

yes, and the way he's smiling when he reads the name of the winner...

Anonymous said...

Yes it sweet, like she didn't even need a second name. I thought she held herself together well. I little nervy, but the speech was heartfelt, and included everyone, and it was well done. I like the dress also. Looks like Chanel, does anyone know?

I particularily liked her thanks to her parents, and to Ginou.

Dorothy Porker said...

Thank you all for the translations. I picked up more than I realized. What a lovely moment and speech. I know that Marion was inspired by an older person (grandmother?) and a young child (blonde angel?) in her performance...

Anonymous said...

in France we don't ask to the people on the red carpet where their dresses came from! It's not like Hollywood.... perhaps because we are used to see people well dressed lol

and alos now when you read "marion" we know that it's marion cotillard, same as gérard (depardieu) or johnny (hallyday)

Anonymous said...

Amélie is right. Things are completly different between the Césars and the american/british ceremonies. There are not many interviews, just one with the French Channel Canal+ who organizes the ceremony every year, and the red carpet walk is very short. But I think the César ceremony is funnier. this year was boring as hell, just the amazing Jean Rochefort saved the day, but last year it was amazing with Valérie Lemercier as the host

Anonymous said...

I have only heard angel used in French, in relation to a romantic partner, but possibly she meant a child (a niece or nephew perhaps), I think she also thanked Marcel as an inspiration, is that the Marcel in the film?

Anonymous said...

oh yes, and she did indeed say both grandmothers.

Anonymous said...

i don't think so! and "marcel" can also be "marcelle"

Anonymous said...

No I don't think this is the Marcel in the film, and as Amélie said, it could be a woman (Marcelle, like Edith Piaf's daughter who died very young).
Angel is indeed used sometimes in a love relationship, but not that much actually. It depends on them, this is their business after all ^^. Maybe it's Guillaume but she didn't want to say his name in public. What a pity he wasn't ther by her side ! :( . I hope we'll see him on Sunday but I doubt it.

Anonymous said...

Perhaps she has a friend Marcel or Marcelle then. I thought it was strange that she would thank him.

Anonymous said...

Maybe she has a little niece or newphew, which would have been sweet. I hope she had a good time at the Oscars, whoever she brings with her. It would be nice if she brought Olivier.

Anonymous said...

for marcel, she thanked him just before her grandmothers so perhaps he's her grand father

Anonymous said...

Maybe it was, it just seemed odd to have it stuch in their. The reason they ask about the fashions is that it is big business for the fashion houses, literally millions every year, and recognition for smaller designers. The interviewers are instructed to ask the actresses, and sometimes the actors too, 'who they are wearing'.

I loved Charlotte Rambling on the red carpet saying that even though she wasn't nominated and not going to win, she was still nervous for the night, and those that were. I thought it was terribly sweet of her.

Anonymous said...

yes but in france we all know the "haute couture" brands etc
no need to do publicity for their clothes, only for the perfume and cosmetics. There is no such need to have or to know which couturier designed the clothes . I know that in the Us some are making copy of the dresses actresses are wearing for the oscars, and that just days later.

Anonymous said...

It isn't even the copying so much as the fashion houses themselves who make bucket loads, and in truth Chanel are one of the worst. They have an iconic brand, they don't need the publicity, but the list of actresses Lagerfield has signed up to wear their clothes, is hugh.

I like it when a 'star' wears a little known designer, and then the designer becomes well known I t happened to Ben deLisi a couple of years aho when Winslet wore that gorgeous red dress to the Oscars.

Anonymous said...

Congratulations Marion!
I found from another blogger that she is wearing JPG HC SS08, I'm not a fashion expert and never heard the name.

Anonymous said...

I persume that means John Paul Gautier, Haute Couture, spring/summer 2008. I know Gautier because of the perfume, never seen any of the clothes before.

Anonymous said...

Ha good old Alain Delon , people in France make fun of him because well he thinks of himself VERY highly but he's a sweet guy.
Well I do have to say that I adore Cecile defrance and Catherine Frott in "odette toutlemonde was just the most adorable thing ever but Marion was still the best by far.

Anonymous said...

Another thing VALERIE LEMERCIER!!!!! gosh last year was just hilarious , the host really makes a big difference.
I missed her all the way trough she would have made the all ceremony much more relax.

Anonymous said...

Thank you poppy.

Anonymous said...

well, actually, Alain Delon thinks very high of himself, he's just so arrogant and annoying ! He knows he is (was?) a great actor and he doesn't hide his pride. But he can be great when he has to be, like he was when he gave the César to Marion.

Anonymous said...

today marion has 6 pages on the french "elle " magazine, with the some of the photos already scanned from the US version

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the translation of the speech and also for this nice Site.

P.S. Her brother Guillaume accompanies Marion to the "Césars"

P.P.S. If you want, you can also visit the forum of the official site!
