Friends, France has chosen its foreign language submission for the Oscars and no, it's not "La Vie En Rose." France went with Persepolis, winner of the jury prize at Cannes this year. I'm actually very much looking forward to seeing this film, but you know, it's still a bit of a let down.
In any case, this is the right spirit:
"Meanwhile, for lovers of La Vie En Rose, there is still hope that its star, Marion Cotillard -- undoubtedly the best thing about the film -- will be nominated for Best Actress. If that doesn't happen, THEN I'll start working up some serious outrage." More...

Well, the french entry is selected by a selection comitee headed by Henry Fremiaux, who is the boss at the Cannes film festival.
And Persepolis has won the jury grand prix this year at Cannes.
May be he considers that Persepolis has one chance to win the foreign film award, and one chance to win the animated film award, and Marion Cotillard still has a chance to win the best actress award.
That makes 3 different possible chances of winning an Academy award, in 3 different categories.
When La vie en Rose would have had very little chance to win the foreign film award on its own merit, Marion's performance taken apart.
So.
I couldn't agree more. I think the choice was so on point, it opened up the door to several possibilities, and it was a worthy-risk to go with a non-traditional submission. I say bravo to the committee!
