Virtuous Marion

Last night, Marion was on hand to receive (along with Amy Ryan, Ellen Page, dreamy James McAvoy, and Casey Affleck) the Virtuoso Award from the Santa Barbara International Film Festival:

A comparison

As we all know by now, Marion Cotillard is slated to star as Billie Frechette opposite Johnny Depp in Michael Mann's period thriller, Public Enemies.

Here is a physical comparison between Cotillard and Frechette (click for larger image):

I'd say with some makeup, it's a very close match!

Marion in EW: Oscar spotlight

If only I had a scanner!

EW asked this year's Oscar nominees how they felt about the uncertainty surrounding this year's ceremony:

"I do not know what is 'bummer.'" - Charmingly French Best Actress nominee Marion Cotillard, on whether it's a bummer that her first nomination comes during a year in which the Oscar ceremony is in jeopardy.

They also ran a profile on each major category. Here's their piece on Cotillard:

MARION COTILLARD
La Vie en Rose

Age 32 Role Legendary French chanteuse Edith Piaf. Oscar History First nomination. Karaoke Dreamin' As a teenager in Orléans, France, Cotillard used to lipsynch to Maddona's "Material Girl." "With my microphone, I was the pop star of my bedroom!" she laughs. That clowning turned out to be good practice for her uncanny performance in La Vie, which she approached with scientific precision. "I took all the songs and I calculated the length of the notes, of the silences, and how she would breathe. Then I did it again and again and again," Cotillard says. She worked equally hard to nail the way Piaf stood on stage while belting out those tunes. "Even if on screen to you don't see my hands or feet, the whole body is involved." Up Next She sings - for real this time - in Rob Marshall's Nine, based on the Broadway musical adapted from Federico Fellini's 8 1/2.

Blanchett and Cotillard share a moment

EDIT: IMDB also have a picture of Cotillard on the red carpet, as well as one of her presenting the Best Supporting Actor award:

Marion Joins Mann, Depp, Bale Project

Variety is reporting that Marion will be joining the cast of Michael Mann's "Public Enemies." This is fantastic news -- our girl has skyrocketed to the A-list in record time. Congratulations!

The Oscar-nominated "La Vie en rose" star Cotillard will play Billie Frechette, the lover of the country's most notorious gangster, John Dillinger (Depp).

Marion d'Or

Check out this latest interview, courtesy of the Telegraph:

Here's an excerpt:

"Cotillard speaks in equally dramatic and effusive terms about her acting idols, some of whom she has met recently in Los Angeles - she lives in Paris but is over on an extended stay for the awards. She was overwhelmed when Daniel Day-Lewis presented her with the Breakthrough Performance trophy at the Palm Springs International Film Festival some weeks ago. 'More than the fact that I admire him, I really think he's one of the greatest actors ever,' she tells me, adding that his calling her 'a remarkable performer' has left her 'still in the clouds, like woo-woo, and the rainbows'. Encounters with Angelina Jolie and Sean Penn (whose name in Cotillard's cadence resembles nothing so much as 'champagne') elicit near-equal rapture. The awe on her face at the mention of Penn tells the story, and of Jolie she exclaims: 'There's an amazing positive energy that comes out of this woman. She has such a wonderful aura.'"

Marion Attends the DGA Awards Ceremony

Marion is a presenter at tonight's Directors Guild of America awards gala. Check out more pictures of her arrival here.

SAG Awards

According to Boomer at The Envelope, Marion will DEFINITELY be at the SAG Awards tomorrow. As well as being a nominee, he says she will be presenting the Best Supporting Actor (Film) award.

See the post here.

Marion's Oprah Visit

From Oprah.com, here's a transcript of the interview as well as some stills:

A first-time nominee for Best Actress, Marion Cotillard thrilled Hollywood in her role as French singer Edith Piaf in the French language biopic La Vie En Rose.

Marion's transformation into the legendary performer—from her teen years spent begging on the street to her final days as a morphine addict—has earned her critical raves and a Golden Globe® win.

This year, the Golden Globes traditional ceremony was canceled because of the writer's strike, so Marion says her award was delivered in an unconventional way—to her hotel room by room service! Still, she says she wasn't disappointed with the way things turned out. "I have so many things to enjoy that I can't be disappointed," she says. "What is happening to me right now is something unique—it's huge."

Oprah calls Marion's performance in La Vie en Rose transformative. "It's like you opened yourself up and poured her in," Oprah says.

From the moment she read the script, Marion says she knew she couldn't pass up this role. "You don't have the opportunity being a 30-year-old to play a whole life," she says. "I saw right away it was something unique that I would have so much fun."

Marion says that, in some ways, she's been preparing for this role her entire life. "When I was young, I loved to play the old lady, the old man. That was back when I was in 9 on stage in vacation camp," she says.

Marion says she spent a lot of time watching and listening to Edith. "I chose a way to work which is not a very classical way. I decided not to experience the voice or the body language until I was on set," she says. "I would say I fed myself with her."

What's Marion most looking forward to on Oscar® night? Everything!

"I'm a French actress with a French movie. I would never have imagined that I would be here with you Oprah, to have a [Golden Globe®]," she says. "It's a whole dream, so I will definitely enjoy every single second of it."

Oscar Nominee Marion Cotillard Reacts!

Watch Marion's Reaction. Click here. She's *so* excited and emotional.

From the Associated Press:

"It's as if I had swallowed some fireworks or something like this. My friends and my family in Paris, they are so happy." — Marion Cotillard, on her best actress nomination for "La Vie en Rose.

Source

EDIT from k_obrien (sorry Dor!)

Her reaction from The Envelope/The LA Times:

"There are so many beautiful movies and performances this year, so for a French actress, with a French movie, to have this response is very, very special. I really hope for [the striking writers] to find a solution and, of course, quickly before the Oscars. I really wish them to find a resolution to go back work because creativity is on hold and it can't be on hold. It's like a flow and you have to let it out... I was so happy [when I heard I was nominated]. It's hard to describe this feeling, but the first person I thought of was Olivier Dahan, the director who offered me that amazing adventure..."

Congrats, Marion!

Finally, here's a reminder of why Marion has received such a serious number of accolades for her performance (spoiler alert):

Thanks, Andrew!

The "Big" Day

The moment is near. Tomorrow morning, Oscar nominations for the 80th Academy Awards will be announced. Here at Marion Cotillard's Road to Oscar, we hope a well-deserved nomination comes her way. For one, if it doesn't, the title of the blog looks proper stupid. But seriously folks, let's stay positive and rest assured that, as my dear Serena from Awards Daily stated in an effort to calm down my last-minute nerves:

Marion is in very good shape as of now. It’s true. Nobody knows anything. But I’m VERY confident that Marion’s name will be called. For one thing, Best Actress is not ridiculously competitive this year. (Well, it seems it never is. *sigh*) Plus I don’t think even they could ignore a performance of this magnitude. I think her chances of getting in are very close to the 90% mark. Posssibly even higher. AMPAS can be foolish. But I don’t think that they’re that stunned.

So take a deep breath, and wake up early tomorrow morning to check out the nominations ceremony. If you live outside the US, you can go here at around 8:30am (EST) to watch the ceremony live.

¡Buena suerte Marion!

Marion Featured on Time Magazine

I had forgotten to scan this piece from Time Magazine's January 21st issue. The piece highlights the best performances of the year, so, of course, Marion is included. I apologize for the poor quality, but eh, better this than nothing, right? Enjoy!

Oscar Roundtable

How fantastic is this? Every weekend before Oscar nominations, Newsweek hosts the "Oscar Timetable" which features many probable nominees. Included in the list this year is Marion! Click here to watch the video.

Here's the introductory paragraph:

Daniel Day-Lewis arrived a little late, but he did it in style. He was wearing a jaunty porkpie hat and a black-and-white Western shirt that looked like something swiped from Bob Dylan's closet. The result was so un-Hollywood that George Clooney, this roundtable's class clown, couldn't stop ribbing his fellow best-actor hopeful. Question: "Daniel, do you remember your first professional job?" Clooney: "It was a Western, wasn't it?" One of the delights of these annual gatherings is watching beautiful, talented, rich celebrities become just folks. James McAvoy, who stars in "Atonement," spent the time waiting to go onstage at L.A.'s Hammer Museum talking about trying to steal some wineglasses from a recent Oscar event, only to be caught by the waiter. Just before they were announced onstage, Clooney turned to Angelina Jolie and said, "Let's not go out!" She then pointed to two nonactors nearby and said, "Let's send them instead." Before long, everyone-newbies and supercelebs-bonded. Jolie and Marion Cotillard, the French star of "La Vie en Rose," chatted about Provence. "Juno" star Ellen Page confessed that she just got her first apartment. It's a converted brothel, and it's haunted. "My stuff keeps vanishing," she said. "Weird things, like makeup." Advice to Ellen: if you do win an Oscar, hide it.

Just for Fun...

As you know, the Oscar nominations will be announced this upcoming Tuesday morning (at 8:30 AM EST). I'm a bit obsessed with Oscar history (as you've probably surmised), and every year I come up with predictions. So why not share 'em with you? I'm generally pretty accurate -- though I am better with predicting winners than nominees, to be honest. In any case, here they are -- let me know what you think!

Best Motion Picture of the Year
Into the Wild
Juno
Michael Clayton
No Country for Old Men
There Will Be Blood

Alt. Atonement
Comment: I really want "Atonement" to make it to the final five, but it has been snubbed by so many guilds, that I've grown weary. If it does make it to the end, I think it'll bump off "Into the Wild," which is one of my favorite films of the year. In an ideal world, "Michael Clayton" would be out and "Atonement" in.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role

George Clooney, Michael Clayton
Daniel Day-Lewis, There Will Be Blood
Johnny Depp, Sweeney Todd
Emile Hirsch, Into the Wild
Viggo Mortensen, Eastern Promises

Alt. James McAvoy, Atonement or Ryan Gosling, Lars and the Real Girl
Comment: The most vulnerable person here is Viggo, who was fantastic in "Eastern Promises." If Gosling makes it, expect Viggo (or Hirsch, because of the young male vote going to Gosling) to be kicked off the list. Regarding McAvoy, if "Atonement" makes a showing for Picture and Director, expect to see him nominated (and probably Keira as well).

Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role
Cate Blanchett, Elizabeth: The Golden Age
Julie Christie, Away from Her
Marion Cotillard, La Vie En Rose
Angelina Jolie, A Mighty Heart
Ellen Page, Juno

Alt. Laura Linney, The Savages or Amy Adams, Enchanted
Comment: The lack of critical (or SAG) love for Linney or Adams has been fatal. I'm very comfortable with my picks in this category and don't expect any upsets.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role
Casey Affleck, The Assassination of Jesse James
Javier Bardem, No Country for Old Men
Paul Dano, There Will Be Blood
Hal Holbrook, Into The Wild
Tom Wilkinson Michael Clayton

Alt. Tommy Lee Jones, No Country for Old Men
Comment: I'm taking a bit of a risk here with Dano, especially because he did not receive a SAG nod. However, the recent surge of "There Will Be Blood" should carry him directly toward the final five. The fact that he gives an exceptional performance also helps. If anyone should kick him off, it's previous winner Jones, who gives one of his best performances to date in "No Country."

Best Performance by Actress in a Supporting Role
Cate Blanchett, I'm Not There
Catherine Keener, Into the Wild
Saoirse Ronan, Atonement
Amy Ryan, Gone Baby Gone
Tilda Swinton, Michael Clayton

Alt. Ruby Dee, American Gangster
Comment: I feel very good about this category as well. The only one on shaky ground is Ronan (my personal pick), mainly because of the lack of a SAG nod. Dee is a legend and gives a solid, albeit too short performance (but who cares about that, says Ms. Dench). Personally, I would honor Dee with an honorary Oscar, and not for this particular performance, which is just not as strong as the ladies in my list.

Best Achievement in Directing
P.T. Anderson, There Will Be Blood
Coen Brothers, No Country for Old Men
Sidney Lumet, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
Sean Penn, Into the Wild
Julian Schnabel, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

Alt. Joe Wright, Atonement
Comment: I'd love to see Wright recognized for his towering achievement, but the cards just don't seem to be there. Schnabel has been collecting various kudos as of late, which is fantastic. I haven't seen "Diving Bell" yet, but I've respected his prior films -- especially "Before Night Falls." My gutsy pick here is Lumet -- another legend who might just sneak in and even take the big boy home. Risky, but whatever, this isn't science.

Here are the rest:

Best Writing, Original Screenplay
Eastern Promises - Steve Knight
I'm Not There - Todd Haynes, Oren Moverman

French Pride

Here's a great interview of Marion's where she reflects on her Golden Globe win and the globe-trotting whirlwind she's been on for the past year:

Marion Cotillard tucked into my plate of calamari, leant towards me and said: "This is crazy. I've won a Golden Globe - and my parents don't know what it is."

Then she corrected herself. "I was imagining my parents - both stage actors - thinking: 'What is this Golden Globe?' Then my father called and said: 'The whole of France knows what a Globe is now, because of you'."

Marion GG comment in EW

Entertainment Weekly ran an article about this year's Golden Globes, and gets a nice quote from Marion:

For the year's many provocative smaller films, like Diving Bell, No Country For Old Men, Juno, and There Will Be Blood, the spotlight of a glitzy awards show would have been particularly welcome. "A lot of movies this year are about something," says Schnabel. For her part, Marion Cotillard, who won best actress in a musical or comedy for her performance as Edith Piaf in La Vie en Rose, is trying to maintain a healthy perspective, despite the fact that she was deprived of her first big red-carpet moment. (Cotillard looks nothing like she did in Rose.) "I'm not disappointed or bittersweet," she says. "I'm just enjoying this. I can't try and think what it could have been."

La Vie en Rose @ CDG

The Costume Designers Guild has nominated La Vie en Rose for their period film category:

Atonement
Elizabeth: The Golden Age
LA VIE EN ROSE
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
3:10 to Yuma

Oscar nominations for hair & makeup, production design, and costume design are looking more and more likely for La Vie en Rose. And hopefully, if the film garners multiple nominations apart from just Best Actress, it will increase Marion's chances (different/more branches will have seen the film and, of course, Marion's performance).

Shout Out

The good folks at Awards Daily just ran a lovely congratulations message for Marion:

Did we almost forget to officially congratulate Marion Cotillard for her Best Actress Golden Globe win?
ok, so that’s really just an excuse to post this photo (and again be reminded of the glamour we missed seeing last night… *sigh*).

As Dorothy Porker commented earlier today, “Although her performance very well transcends the physical, the absolute metamorphosis should be emphasized.” Alright, I’m here to help emphasize it.

I'd like to thank the lovely Ryan C. for the shout out :) They've been steadfast supporters of Marion from the very beginning (I'm talking last summer!). Check out the complete post here.

Also, there's some footage of Marion's reaction to her Golden Globe courtesy of Access Hollywood. Click here.

I'll end with this: what a difference a day makes. Before last night, Marion was relegated to the back burner. In fact, when the Golden Globe nominations were announced, none of the entertainment shows even mentioned her -- some didn't even have her in the list of nominees (which might have been due to a glitch, but still). Now, all of a sudden, Marion became the "upset" win. Balderdash. At least we knew she was a frontrunner from the beginning. Take that, Hollywood Infotainment shows! :)

There Will Be Champagne

Here's Marion's reaction to her Golden Globe triumph last night, courtesy of the New York Times:

Marion Cotillard was in L.A. when, plopped down in front of the tube, she find [sic] out that the Globes voters had judged her performance in “La Vie en Rose” irresistible. “Definitely there was champagne involved.” she said. “ Definitely. It was a big surprise.”

Ms. Cotillard added that, yes, a big event and party would have been nice, but that there were more important matters to consider. “I am more sorry that there is no resolution to the writers strike,” she said. “We need for things to work out so everyone can go back to work.”

When that happens, Ms. Cotillard, the ingénue of this year’s season, will likely not be wanting for proffers.

MARION WINS GOLDEN GLOBE!

Marion Cotillard won the Lead Actress award (Comedy or Musical) tonight, thereby becoming the first female to win a Globe for a foreign language performance since Liv Ullmann won in 1973 for Utvandrarna (English title: The Emigrants) (thanks, K!).

On behalf of all of your fans, congratulations, Marion!

And thanks, HFPA, for awarding EXCELLENCE and not hype. SAG, you're up.

Up for my Globe predictions?

Golden Globes Predictions

OK, here are my GG predictions. While my conviction that Marion will win tonight has diminished somewhat, I'm still predicting her for the win. Let's hope the HFPA has the good sense to reward excellence tonight.

Marion Featured on IMDB

Every day IMDB features an actor in its home page. Today, Marion is that lucky person:

Head over to IMDB and check out their Oscars section (titled "Road to the Oscars," hmm...should I sue?).

Ubiquitous Marion

Pete Hammond over at The Envelope has an interesting article about Marion, specifically about the potential effects her visibility may have on her Oscar campaign. Here's an excerpt:

Saturday night, Cotillard receives her L.A. Film Critics award for best actress. Then Sunday, she and Picturehouse hope to hear the anchors of "Access Hollywood" (oy!) announce she has won a Golden Globe as well.

It's a smart strategy since she is not as well known here as in France and the personal touch can make a big difference, particularly when there are the likes of an icon (favorite Julie Christie), a superstar (Angelina Jolie) and a celebrated newcomer (Ellen Page) -- all expected to have a run at the actress race as well.

Picturehouse topper Bob Berney engineered a highly successful campaign for Charlize Theron in "Monster," and the exposure he put the star through during a key period paid off big-time with her ultimate win at the Oscars. He obviously hopes to repeat with Cotillard, whose film was released last June.

That's Mr. Berney next to Marion, by the way. More...

Marion celebrates GG nod; EW's Top 25

Actor Colin Farrell showed his support for Marion at a Golden Globes party thrown in honor of her nominated portrayal of Edith Piaf in La Vie en Rose. Click on thumbnails for bigger photos:

Hello Magazine has a nice report on the event. Here's a snippet:

The beautiful La Vie En Rose star - looking the epitome of Parisian chic in an elegant black dress - is in the running for the best actress trophy. When asked how she celebrated being nominated the 32-year-old replied simply: "Champagne!"

The Golden Globes are canceled, but NBC will air a one-hour press conference this Sunday to announce the winners.

Entertainment Weekly has named La Vie en Rose one of the Top 25 Films You Need To See Before Oscar Night. The films are "ranked in order of their likelihood to be nominated." La Vie en Rose comes in at #14, presumably because of Marion's buzz. Click on the thumbnail for the full scan posted at ONTD, or see all the Atonement/Oscar scans at the link:

In their latest issue, EW also predicts Marion will earn a nomination, but will come in third after Christie (their pick to win it) and Page. They've also got a bit about her in their favorite musical moments article:

"On a completely different plane, Marion Cotillard's all-consuming turn as Edith Piaf in the remarkable French-language film La Vie en Rose was devastating -- more possession by the heartbreakingly talented songbird than mere performance."

A couple more BFCA photos...

IMDB has posted new photos of Marion at last night's BFCAs:

Bob Boyett on La Vie en Rose

In Variety, multiple Tony Award winner Bob Boyett recently gave high praise to La Vie en Rose and Marion:

"Marion Cotillard and the director Olivier Dahan have captured one of the most compelling portraits of a very rare and special person that I've ever seen anywhere. It is haunting. Piaf obviously had a great talent, but Dahan goes underneath to expose this extremely raw person who did have incredible relationships and did benefit from them, but in the long run she had a lot of hard knocks along the way. People sometimes think her problems were self-imposed, but from early on she had a lot of physical and mental problems. It's the story of an extraordinary spirit. For two or three days after seeing this film, I couldn't get it out of my head."

Be Sure to Watch Marion on Ferguson Tonight

Our friends at Magnifique Marion Cotillard are reporting that Marion Cotillard will be a guest on The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson tonight. Make sure you tune in (CBS @ 12:35 ET).

Screencaps of Marion's VH1 red carpet interview

EDIT: Marion lost to Julie Christie. :( Here's hoping Marion will pull a Brody-esque upset at the Oscars, eh?

I just snapped some screencaps of Marion's BFCA red carpet interview. Despite the fact that the idiot called her Emily Deschanel and referred to Edith Piaf as Edith "Pilaf", Marion remained graceful:

More PSIFF photos; Cotillard won't cross picket line @ GGs

A Socialite's Life has two photos posted of Marion on the Palm Springs International Film Festival red carpet (click on thumbnails for larger image):

And here is a snippet about the Golden Globes, where Marion is a nominee, and the ongoing writer's strike (also from A Socialite's Life):

The red carpeters were asked about the possibility that there might not be a Golden Globe awards ceremony next week due to the ongoing writer's strike. It took a Frenchwoman to keep it real. "La Vie En Rose" star Marion Cotillard said she wouldn't be crossing the picket line despite not even being an actor's guild member. "I think that everyone involved in a project should share the benefit of it," said Cotillard in regards to the writers' demands to receive more shares of the proceeds from projects.
It is a little disappointing we won't get to see Marion, a first-time nominee (though it's doubtful it'll be her last time at the Globes), collect her Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical/Comedy Globe, though her solidarity towards the WGA's mission is very admirable.

And remember -- Tonight the BFCA's (Critics Choice Awards) air at 9 P.M. EST on VH1. As this is not a struck event, most -- if not all -- nominees are expected to attend. Marion is nominated for Best Actress, and La Vie en Rose is up for Best Foreign Language Film.
